Securing planning permission is only one stage of the ecological process. During construction, it is essential to ensure that ecological requirements are properly implemented. This is where an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) plays a key role.
An ECoW provides on-site ecological supervision and advice, helping contractors comply with planning conditions and environmental legislation. Their presence helps ensure that mitigation measures are correctly implemented and that protected species are not harmed during construction activities.
Typical responsibilities include supervising vegetation clearance, checking for nesting birds, overseeing species translocation, and advising on best practice during works.
An ECoW helps reduce the risk of accidental breaches of environmental legislation, although responsibility ultimately remains with the developer and contractor.
In addition to compliance, ECoWs also provide valuable documentation and reporting, which can support communication with Local Planning Authorities.
For complex or sensitive developments, ECoW supervision is often required. Even where it is not mandatory, it can be a valuable investment in reducing project risk.
