Bats are one of the most commonly encountered protected species in development projects, and they are subject to strict legal protection.
If a site includes buildings, trees, or structures with potential to support bats, a survey is often required as part of the planning process.
The process usually begins with a Preliminary Roost Assessment, which involves a daytime inspection for signs of bats and suitable roosting features.
If moderate or high potential is identified, further activity surveys may be required between May and September. These surveys record bat presence and behaviour using specialist equipment.
If bats are confirmed, mitigation measures and potentially a licence will be required before works can proceed.
Early assessment is essential to ensure surveys can be scheduled appropriately and to minimise the risk of delays.
